Our Woman’s Power Hour profiles celebrate women who are storming the short stay industry and this edition is showcasing Cornelia De Ruiter who is founder at Homewings, an interior design company at heart with a fresh approach offering tailored packages and curated online shopping experiences.
How did you get into the short-term rentals industry?
We started out serving the residential market with an accessible and fast alternative to the traditional interior design service industry and this rapidly caught the attention of short let landlords. From there we expanded our service value proposition to branding, procurement, project management and installation which means that we are the perfect partner for any professional landlord and operator in this industry.
How did you come to found your company and what were the biggest challenges you faced when setting it up?
One of the biggest challenges we faced as we got started was finding the right people, particularly when your business and value proposition is still rapidly evolving. By the time you think you finally found the right person, the capabilities you need have evolved…
How do you intend to face the challenges within the industry as a company?
We are going to continue to be laser-focused on what our customers need, work as one with our customers and continuing to get better, smarter, faster and bigger 🙂
What is your advice for the next generation of leaders and change-makers?
Challenge yourself, but stay true to your own style and values – do things your way
How do you keep self-motivated?
I generally love what I do, but if I ever struggle I find that a good night’s sleep works miracles!
Biggest lesson you have learnt about yourself?
That I should always trust my gut feel – when it doesn’t feel right, it’s wrong.
Best piece of advice you were given?
Life’s a journey, not a destination
If you could run any company in the world what would it be and why?
I am pretty darn excited about the potential of Homewings, so I’m good right where I’m at 🙂
Who is the individual you admire the most?
There are many – Angela Merkel for being the strongest politician grrrrrl ever, Victoria Beckham for being a total ex spice girl super mommy kick ass designer gorgeous boss lady, Obama for making me believe there was hope for politicians, my my husband for always being his beautiful self, and – Ok, I’ll stop here 😉
Holiday destination of choice?
Mallorca! We have a home there and it’s absolutely my favourite place to be, far away from London smog, surrounded by lemon trees and butterflies. The people from the village are the sweetest, we buy our food from the local farm, the kids can run around independently and I got to design the house exactly the way I wanted it.
Your Favourite city in the world?
I have a few however New Orleans is high up there, The Vibe, Music, Food, Architecture, the people, I just love it.
How do you celebrate your achievements?
Generally, I should probably celebrate more haha (I tend to already be working on the next challenge, by the time I’ve succeeded with the previous) … But my husband is good at reminding me and making sure we celebrate with a nice dinner
I have to admit that I’ve not yet really gotten into the podcast thing.
What book would you recommend? The Politeia by Plato
